Are kayaks allowed in the BWCA?
Kayaks can be used in the BWCA. Kayaks and paddle boards can be used. Only a few lakes allow small motor boats, so it’s okay if the boat is non-motorized.
Can you canoe into Canada in BWCA?
A remote area border crossing permit is required to enter Canada. Only residents of Canada and the United States can use the permit, which can only be used in designated areas such as the wilderness border of the Boundary Waters.
When should I go to Boundary Waters?
The open water season in the Boundary Waters lasts from early May to late October. In a typical year, the ice on large lakes breaks up in May and the smaller lakes get it back in October. The canoeing season can be thought of as extending from ice-out to ice-in.
Can I carry a gun in the Boundary Waters?
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) has a firearms policy. The BWCAW is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. There are no restrictions on the carrying of guns in the wilderness.

Glass bottles are not allowed in containers. It is possible to keep items other than food and beverages in their original containers. Pack food into plastic containers at the end of the trip.
How long does it take to canoe the Boundary Waters?
We usually recommend 5 days or more to allow time to leave the hustle bustle at home and get into a rhythm with the wilderness. A shorter trip might be better for your group because there are many great Boundary Waters routes for short trips.
Can you make a fire in the Boundary Waters?
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Superior National Forest are not allowed to have campfires.
